The population in Alaska is about 738,000 and grew by 1,649 last year. But the real image is there are more retired people in Alaska and the increase was in new born babies. The working age people have migrated out of the state. Alaska reports about 351,759 jobs with 23% of those workers are out of state. There are 77,900 government employees in Alaska with an additional 22,000 military. That is 14,000 federal employees, 22,000 state employees, 40,000 local employees. So 22% of Alaska’s workforce works for the government and that is not sustainable. If they vote to reinstate the Defined Benefit Package, the state will go bankrupt and many people will loose their retirement and benefits. As the legislature and municipalities continues to creatively with new taxes, the retired and working people will leave the state making the problem worse. The greedier the government employees get with pay and benefits, the sooner they go over the fiscal cliff. Unless something is done to bring back private business, our economy is doomed.
